Recognising The Signs of Depression

It can sometimes be challenging to distinguish between the normal ups and downs of life and the more persistent experience of depression.

However, if you identify with several of the feelings below, and these feelings are intense and ongoing, it’s important to consider seeking support:

It’s crucial to remember that this list is not exhaustive, and depression can manifest differently in each individual.

The Vicious Cycle of Depression

Depression impacts us on multiple levels – physically, emotionally, and cognitively. These aspects are interconnected, creating a challenging cycle. For instance, feeling low and hopeless can lead to a lack of motivation to get out of bed or engage in activities.

This inactivity can then result in physical lethargy and heaviness, further reinforcing feelings of low mood and sadness. This creates a vicious circle that can leave you feeling trapped and increasingly hopeless.

Understanding Depression

Depression and low moods are often symptoms of a deeper emotional disconnection. At the core of this disconnection is the tension between our true selves and how we navigate the world.

Over time, we can internalise the habit of suppressing or abandoning our emotions, needs, and desires in order to meet the expectations of others or gain external approval. This constant cycle of self-rejection and neglect sets the stage for emotional pain, dissatisfaction and ultimately depression.

When we reject our authentic feelings to avoid disapproval or rejection, we create an internal conflict. This conflict manifests as feelings of worthlessness, frustration and sadness.

The disconnect between who we truly are and the version of ourselves we present to the world leads to a pervasive sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction, which can eventually spiral into low moods or depression.

Over time, the more we neglect our emotional needs, the more profound this internal conflict becomes, contributing to the intensifying feelings of sadness or hopelessness that characterise depression.

Depression, unlike temporary sadness, often feels like an unrelenting weight, making it difficult to engage with life or experience joy. It can feel like a heavy cloud that dims the light in everyday life, draining energy and motivation.

It’s important to understand that depression is not a permanent state, though. It serves as a signal from our body and mind that something is out of balance—something needs attention, compassion and care.

Depression can emerge from various sources, such as life changes, trauma, prolonged stress, or unmet emotional needs. Whatever the cause, the central message of depression is that something within us requires attention and care.

The link between depression and self-rejection lies in the disconnect between our authentic selves and the persona or mask we create to gain external validation. When we suppress or abandon our true feelings and desires, we essentially disconnect from who we are. This disconnection breeds an emotional void—an inner dissatisfaction that erodes our sense of self-worth over time.

Living out of alignment with our core values or suppressing our emotional needs creates a persistent, underlying unease. As this internal conflict deepens, it manifests as depression or low mood, making it feel impossible to escape the cycle of emotional pain.

The more we rely on others for approval and neglect our own emotional needs, the more profound the depression becomes. It is as if we’ve abandoned ourselves, leading to a pervasive sense of hopelessness and emotional depletion.

The good news is that depression, like anxiety, doesn’t define us. It’s a signal, a cry for help that we need to listen to and respond to with compassion. Understanding the root causes of depression and learning how to shift our relationship with ourselves can provide a path to healing.

How Therapy Can Help with Depression and Low Mood

Therapy offers a valuable space to explore and understand the specific causes of your depression. By gaining insight into your individual triggers and contributing factors, we can develop the most effective approach to manage and overcome these feelings.

I can also draw upon techniques like Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), if it feels right for you. CBT provides practical tools and strategies to challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel the vicious cycle of depression. Together, we can work on breaking these patterns and fostering more positive and helpful ways of thinking and behaving.

If you’re ready to take the first step towards moving beyond the fog and despair of depression and low mood, I encourage you to reach out. Contact Inner Space Therapy today for a free consultation. Let’s discuss how tailored therapy can help you understand your experiences, develop effective coping strategies, and rediscover the joy and vitality in your life.

FAQs About Depression

What can cause depression?

There isn’t usually one single cause of depression. Instead, it often arises from a combination of factors that can create a vulnerability.

These can include:

  • Lack of a strong support network and feelings of isolation
  • Difficulties in relationships
  • Financial stressors
  • Underlying health problems
  • A family history of depression
  • Substance misuse, such as alcohol or drugs, or other addictions
  • Past difficult experiences, including trauma and/or abuse
  • Hormonal shifts, such as postnatal depression following childbirth

As you can see,
the factors contributing to depression can be physical, emotional, and practical, often interacting in complex ways.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

Choosing the right therapist is personal, and it’s important that you feel comfortable and understood. My approach is warm, supportive, and tailored to your specific needs. I don’t believe in generic solutions—I take the time to truly understand what’s going on for you and what’s driving the challenges you’re facing.

If you’ve tried therapy before and felt unheard or rushed into quick fixes, know that I work differently. I focus on real, lasting change rather than temporary band-aid solutions. If you’re ready to do the work and invest in yourself, I’d love to explore how we can get you where you want to be.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends entirely on you—some clients feel significant changes in just a few sessions, while others prefer longer-term support. I don’t keep you in therapy for longer than necessary, but I also won’t rush you through a rigid programme.

After our first session, I’ll have a clearer idea of what’s needed to get you where you want to be. We’ll focus on practical, effective strategies so you feel real shifts as soon as possible.
